When it comes to blending and compositing images, Adobe Photoshop is the undisputed champ. In fact, Photoshop gives us so many interesting and powerful ways to combine images that our creativity is limited just by our skills and imagination. Just before we tin can commencement combining images, we first need to know how to get multiple images into the aforementioned document. If y'all're new to Photoshop, blending fifty-fifty 2 photos together tin can seem like an impossible task. That'due south because Photoshop opens each image in its ain separate document. To alloy or composite the images, they demand to be in the same document.

In a previous tutorial, nosotros learned all about tabbed and floating document windows in Photoshop. We besides learned how to view and conform multiple open images on the screen using Photoshop's multi-document layouts. In this tutorial, we'll take what we've learned and explore five different ways to easily motion images betwixt documents.

What You'll Acquire

We'll commencement with your basic copy and paste method. Then, we'll learn how to indistinguishable a layer from ane document into some other. Finally, nosotros'll look at iii ways to drag and driblet an epitome betwixt documents. We'll learn how to drag and drop images between tabbed documents, betwixt documents in a multi-document layout, and between two floating certificate windows. Once you've seen how they all piece of work, you tin can pick the method you similar the best! I'll be using Photoshop CC but this tutorial is fully compatible with Photoshop CS6.

This is lesson 8 of x in our Learning the Photoshop Interface series.

Let's become started!

Opening The Images Into Photoshop

To follow along, you'll need two images. Here, I've used Adobe Bridge to navigate to the binder containing the photos I'll be using. To open up them into Photoshop, I'll click on the commencement image on the left to select it. So, to select the second paradigm as well, I'll press and hold my Shift cardinal and click on the 2d image. With both photos selected, I'll double-click on either paradigm to open them into Photoshop:

How To Move An Epitome Between Documents

Method 1: Copy And Paste

The first method we'll acquire for moving images between documents is how to copy and paste an epitome from ane document into another. To copy and paste an prototype, beginning select the document that holds the image you desire to motion. With the document active, select the paradigm within the document by going up to the Select carte in the Card Bar and choosing All. To copy the prototype, get up to the Edit carte du jour and choose Copy. Switch to the certificate where you want to paste the paradigm. And so, go up to the Edit menu and choose Paste. The pasted image will appear on its ain separate layer above the original paradigm in the Layers panel.

Step 1: Select The Showtime Document

Let'southward get through the steps for copying and pasting an epitome between documents using my images every bit an instance. I want to move my texture image into the same document as my portrait image. So the first thing I'll do is select my "texture.jpg" document by clicking on its tab:

Selecting the texture image document.

Selecting the document that holds the image to be copied.

Pace 2: Select The Image

To select the prototype itself, I'll go up to the Select bill of fare in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen. Then, I'll cull All. This places a choice outline around my image, letting me know that the prototype is selected:

Choosing the Select All command in Photoshop.

Going to Select > All.

Step three: Re-create The Image

With the paradigm selected, I'll copy it to the clipboard by going up to the Edit card in the Menu Bar and choosing Copy:

Choosing the Copy command from under the Edit menu in Photoshop.

Going to Edit > Copy

Pace 4: Switch To The Second Document

Next, I'll switch over to my "portrait.jpg" certificate past clicking on its tab:

Selecting the document where the image will be pasted.

Selecting the document where I desire to paste the epitome.

Before I paste the paradigm into the document, let's get-go look in my Layers panel. The Layers panel is where nosotros tin can see all the layers in our certificate. Nosotros'll learn all nearly layers in other tutorials. For now, notice that the paradigm is sitting on the Groundwork layer. The Background layer is currently the only layer in the certificate:

The Layers panel in Photoshop.

The Layers panel showing the document'southward original prototype.

Step five: Paste The Prototype

To paste my texture image, I'll get up to the Edit menu in the Menu Bar. Then, I'll choose Paste:

Selecting the Paste command from under the Edit menu in Photoshop.

Going to Edit > Paste.

Photoshop pastes the texture paradigm into the document. It looks like my texture photo is now the but photograph in the document. That'due south because the texture photo is sitting in front of the portrait photo. Since both photos are the same size, the texture image is blocking the portrait image from view:

The texture image has been pasted into the portrait photo's document in Photoshop.

The "texture.jpg" epitome has been pasted into the "portrait.jpg" image's document.

To confirm that the document does in fact hold both images, let's look again in the Layers panel. This time, nosotros run across that we now accept not ane but ii layers. The original portrait prototype is still sitting on the Groundwork layer. And, Photoshop placed the texture paradigm on a brand new layer, named "Layer 1", above it. Sure enough, both images are now in the same certificate:

The Layers panel showing both photos in the same document in Photoshop.

The Layers console now showing both images in the same Photoshop certificate.

Resetting The Documents

So that'southward the start style of moving images betwixt documents. If you want to follow along with the adjacent methods, y'all'll first need to reset your ii documents back to their original states. Get-go, we'll reset the document where you lot pasted the epitome. Make sure the document is all the same active. So, go upward to the Edit bill of fare in the Menu Bar and cull Undo Paste. This removes the pasted epitome from the document, leaving you with just the original epitome:

Choosing the Undo Paste command from under the Edit menu in Photoshop.

Going to Edit > Undo Paste.

So, switch over to the document that holds the prototype you copied. To remove the selection outline from around the image, go up to the Select menu and cull Deselect. And with that, yous're ready to move on to the next method:

Choosing the Deselect command from under the Select menu in Photoshop.

Past default, Photoshop simply adds the word "copy" to the end of the layer's original name. This volition get the proper name of the layer ("Background re-create") when it'due south moved into the other document. But you can give the duplicate layer a more descriptive name. Since this layer holds my texture image, I'll change the layer'southward name to "Texture".

In the Destination section, choose the document yous want to motility the image into as the destination. I'll choose my "portrait.jpg" document. When you're ready, click OK. Photoshop duplicates the layer and sends it over to the other certificate:

At the moment, my texture image is completely blocking my portrait photo from view. To blend the two images, nosotros can use one of Photoshop'south layer blend modes. I'll go through this rapidly here, but you can learn more virtually blending images in our How To Blend Textures With Photos tutorial.

If we wait in my Layers panel, nosotros see my texture image (on "Layer 1") sitting above my portrait image (on the Groundwork layer). The reason the texture is blocking the portrait from view is considering the texture layer's blend way is currently ready to Normal. The Alloy Mode option is found in the upper left of the Layers panel:

The blend mode for the top layer is set to Normal.

The alloy style for the texture layer is set to Normal.

The Normal blend mode is Photoshop's default blend mode. "Normal" ways that the layer is not blending at all with the layer below it. To blend my texture in with the portrait prototype, all I need to exercise is alter the blend fashion to something different. I'll click on the word "Normal" to open a list of other blend modes. Yous can try out the different blend modes with your images to come across which one works best. I'll become with Soft Low-cal:

And here we come across that just by changing the blend manner from Normal to Soft Low-cal, my texture at present blends in nicely with the portrait, creating an interesting effect. You can learn even more nigh alloy modes, including tips for hands switching betwixt them, in our Flip, Mirror and Rotate Designs and Patterns tutorial:
